In the second volume, [TRANS-] will explore the topic of [TRANS-]lation. In design, ideas are translated into material. Concepts, environmental conditions and cultural forces shape light, space, form, and social conditions. While the final conclusion of this translation is celebrated, the process leading to the solution is where designers spend the majority of their energy exploring, refining and sometimes reinventing their practice. Process is an evolving conversation with an idea. It oscillates between individual reflection, collaborative efforts and many types of media, new and old. In a largely results-based society, how do designers evaluate process?

How can a more thorough assessment of the translation that occurs during creative activities make us better communicators and collaborators with end users, consultants, clients, and all others we affect through design?

Through a reflective examination of the design process, [TRANS-]lation looks to explore the diverse modes of design to learn how new technologies, culture, interdisciplinary partnerships and making shape the process of the contemporary designer.

Consider ::

The tools available for imagining space have expanded far beyond the physical and digital drawing board. From BIM to rapid prototyping, the performance of a design can be tested long before fabrication. How have evidence-based design and advanced digital and physical modeling techniques affected the way design decisions are made?

In a globalized world, ideas must fluidly shift between languages, cultures, and different practice methodologies. How do designers probe international contextual conditions to meaningfully incorporate cultural values, social practices and vernacular traditions into their process?

Cross disciplinary collaboration is becoming increasingly common. Looking to diverse fields such as material science and biology to develop new design logics and efficiencies, how do designers interface with unexpected partners?

As technologic dependency explodes, how do craftspeople and makers bring intelligence and experience that is beyond the capacity of the input/output logic of the computer?
