All interested artists are invited to submit their concept ideas for the Genius Loci Weimar Festival between the opening date of 27 January 2016 up to the deadline of 23 March 2016. Submitted concepts will be displayed in a public exhibition in Weimar in spring 2016. The best projects will chosen, among other means, with the help of an audience vote.

The three winning projects will then be completed with the help of prize money totalling €45,000 before being shown in the context of an evening tour of Weimar, itself part of a wider festival to take place from 12 to 14 August 2016.

Contestants are invited to submit their artistic concepts by 23:59h (CET) on 23 March 2016, including:

  • a thirty-second audiovisual video clip (HD)
  • an explanatory text (max. 300 words)
  • a letter of motivation from the participant or group, including a self-description and appropriate references. The self-description shall point out the professional handling during process time. (max. 300 words)
  • details of the support team and designated representatives

The explanatory text and the self-description will be professionally edited and translated before being displayed to the public.

The three best submissions will be awarded the commission:

  • Commissions will comprise the creation of a 10-15 minute long high-resolution audio-visual production to be presented in the form of video mapping on the respective locations during the festival weekend (12 to 14 August 2016).
  • A budget of 15,000 euros will be made available for the completion of each prize-winning submission
  • Productions will be of the highest technical and artistic quality

Key requirements for the Genius Loci Weimar competition:

  • An innovative composition in the form of an audio-visual video mapping, with particular observance paid to the Genius Loci.
  • An individual, original and sophisticated handling of the spirit of the location with respect to history and architecture, as well as to the people who were active there and who have influenced the surroundings, and to historical events that have left visible or invisible traces.
  • The conscious omission of erratic gimmickry and showmanship, intrusive clichés and careless historical retelling.

THE AWARD WINNING WORK:

Winning submissions will each receive prize money of 15,000 Euros for the fulfilment of the production. The artists (hereafter referred to as participants) will thereby enter into a contract for services with the MXPERIENCE FESTIVAL gUG (limited liability) (hereafter referred to as organiser) and are obliged to provide the commissioned work to the organiser at least 10 days before the start of the festival on 2 August 2016. Details will be outlined in a separate agreement.

The organiser is obliged to assume the costs of projection equipment and accommodation. Any travel costs will be borne by the participants and will be paid from the prize money. The paid-out sum of prize money is a final total amount. Any resulting taxes and duties in the respective country of the participants, as well as in Germany, must be borne by the participants. The participant absolves the organiser from liability and all payment obligations should materials be used in the course of the work that infringe upon or consist of copyrights belonging to third parties.??If the work and subsequent performance makes use of material for which there are third-party copyrights (e.g. GEMA fees), any payable charges with respect to the organiser will be paid out of the prize money. The prize money will thus be reduced in order to make the payment that is due for the rights of the third parties. The organiser recommends the use of royalty-free material. Winning participants have until 30 June 2016 to provide the organisers with a list of materials used, including details on sources and any third-party rights.

Furthermore, the agreement stipulates that the participant or a representative of the organiser provide information at any time on the current status of the work, as well as insights into current progress, with the aim of avoiding any problems that may arise with the implementation of live projection. In addition, before the outset of work the participant or a representative are obliged to travel to Weimar at least once in order to make advance images of the localities.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

The competition is open to individuals and groups who complete the application process in full. All application forms must be submitted online at www.genius-loci-weimar.de.

All participants, enthusiasts, students, amateurs and professionals will be given the same opportunity to take part. However, we recommend that participants clearly highlight their ability to realise the professional skills and motivation that are required to create and implement such a facade projection.

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS:

Individuals and groups should apply with a letter of motivation (max. 300 words) and an explanatory text on their artistic background and development (max. 300 words). We recommend that at least one of the group members has previous experience with facade or video projections.

Participants may choose one of three locations per competition entry. These are the Tempelherrenhaus, Sternbrücke, and the water projection at the Stern. Participants are free to submit concept proposals for more than one facade. Alongside the conception, the participants must also submit the above-listed materials with the aim of illustrating the concept and central ideas of the artistic work. In case of unsatisfactory competition results, the jury and competition management reserve the right to outsource production.

COMPETITION DOCUMENTS:

The organiser will make available a complete package of data and information on the selected facades, including 3D model, photos and plans as well as texts about the cultural and architectural history of the buildings. They are also available to respond to questions.
