The intent of this competition is to solicit design ideas for affordable, carbon positive housing. Designers should consider replicability of their approach in multiple neighborhoods, cities, and/or countries. Program size could range from a micro-home to a tall building depending on the select context or solution. There are no restrictions in regard to program or size. Participants are encouraged to look beyond conventional solutions and consider resiliency in strategies as well.

The challenge is to design a modular pocket housing on an urban residual plot of land in a dense urban city. The solution proposed must be modular and temporary since the land may be vacant for a limited time period. It must be built to provide living space to people on a rental basis, for short duration. The fourth edition of the cultural project Reuse Italy promotes an international architecture competition on the reuse of the “Lake Chapel”, a small octagonal church on the shores of the lake of Bolsena, and faces the issue of the enhancement of ancient pilgrimage routes, as the Via Francigena. This route can be the key-strategy to relaunch this ruin, with new functions related to the pilgrim path. The competition, in fact, open to architects, engineers and students, asks the participants to transform the ruin into a pilgrims accommodation and cultural event center.

However, there’s a difference between preservation and celebration, and we believe Mies’s work deserve to be celebrated. For the sake of this challenge, we are going to consider that the IIT is planning to make a move to bring many of those pieces back to its campus to establish the new “Mies Memorial Library”. A building not only meant to preserve, but also to celebrate the life, works and contributions of one of the founding fathers of modern architecture. A building that will look into the future without forgetting the past. A building capable of encouraging young architects to be ambitious and remind the established ones to never settle. A building which this brief, if you choose to do so, invites you to envision and design.
