The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN®) knowledge community is pleased to announce the HERE & NOW: A House for the 21st Century, International Student Design Competition for the 2019-2020 academic year. Administered by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and sponsored by AIA CRAN®, this program is intended to provide architecture students, working individually or in teams, with a platform to explore residential architecture and residential architectural practice.

Nature Contest is the most comprehensive annual contest of ideas inspired by nature. Individual participants from all disciplines and regions of the world are invited to participate. Participants can enter one of the following three categories. 1. The design concept for nature gadget, 2. The written idea on nature policy or 3. Portfolio of previous work inspired by nature. Each category is described in detail below.

Play is an essential part of all our lives, whether child or adult. Be it playing sports, a board game or simply sharing jokes with friends, play is just as important to adults as building a den or playing dress-up is to a child. The Coronavirus outbreak has left many of us having to spend extended periods of time at home in lockdown, restricting the opportunity to socialise and play in ways that we are used to. How can we use creativity to encourage play at these unique times?

YAC – Young Architects Competitions –  ​ and  Dartagnans launch TREE HOUSE MODULE, a competition of ideas aiming to design and realize a tree house system to put into the oneiric French castles of Vibrac, Mothe Chandeniers, Ebaupinay. A cash prize of € 15,000 (and the realization of the first-ranking project)  will be awarded to the winners selected by an outstanding jury panel made of, among the others,  Espen Surnevik, Matthew Johnson (DS+R), Giulio Rigoni (BIG), Tue Hesselberg Foged (Effekt Architects), Peter Pichler, Patrick Lüth (Snøhetta).

Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (hereinafter referred to as KMFA) is going to budget 195 million NTD for its “Transformation & Rebirth——Exterior Renovation Project of Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.” The Museum looks forward to creative proposals from outstanding domestic or foreign architectural teams, based on a “Coronation” concept to strengthen the function of museum’s roof, solve the substantive issue of roof leakage, and endow it with a new image with aesthetic quality by “retrofit” or “facelift” solutions.

In a difficult time, Penta Real Estate is inviting local and foreign architects and architectural studios to participate in an open, international architectural and urban design competition. The aim of the competition is to find the best solution to complet the residential block in the western part of Prague’s Vysočany. The scope of the project should be at least 280 residential units together with the amenities of commercial or non-commercial purpose (respectively 24,200 square meters of gross floor area). (more…)

Fast Archi Challenges. These are small creative challenges that we will launch regularly. We are talking about projects, illustration, photography, sketches, design, video or others, but they all have the architecture in common.

As the world urbanizes, the challenge to manage waste becomes more acute, as more people means more garbage. While large cities are struggling with their waste management strategies, people of Manshiyat Naser are mastering the ‘resist throwaway culture’. The Zabaleen -a derogatory term for garbage pickers, collects waste from the Egyptian capital, Cairo and carry it back to the neighborhood. It is remarkable to see that the Zabaleen recycles almost 90% of the collected garbage.

“Play” meaning in various ways, including playing like an infant, having fun with friends, indulging in drinks or gambling, taking breaks between work and study, having leeway to things, seeking beauty in literature and art isolated from the secular world, and giving space to machinery part connection. In any case, it is like a source to life, an act full of humanity contrary to pursuing functionality and rationality.
