The annual Antepavilion commission is an initiative to develop, construct and display experimental structures offering emerging artists, makers and architects an opportunity to create new work within a complex urban environment.
Antepavilion has always encouraged reuse through its competitions, however, this year it will be a necessity. Full Reclaim requires entrants to build a structure entirely out to reclaimed materials. A selection of salvaged/recycled materials will be made available to entrants including bricks and other masonry, timber cladding, glass and window frames, and steel. A full schedule of the available materials is available on our website. Entrants can also identify other reclaimed material for Antepavilion to purchase.
The Antepavilion competition is open to everyone; no qualifications are required. We make available some specialist skills, particularly metalworking and structural engineering support. However, Antepavilion promotes a strong DIY ethos so the overriding requirement is that entrants must be able to make and install their work essentially themselves.
Apart from the requirement for use of reclaimed materials, the brief is entirely open.
Entrants will be able to select between 2 sites. Hoxton Docks, a warehouse complex located on the canal in Hackney. The structure can be displayed on any of the rooftops, or the pontoons or barge positioned in the canal adjacent to the docks. The other location is a 0.03ha triangular site is bounded by Page’s Walk to the north-west and Mandela Way to the south.
Further details on this can be found in the full brief on our website: https://www.antepavilion.org/2026
Budget £5,000 is available to the winners for ancillary materials (fixings, adhesives, cement, etc), tools, and specialist skilled labour costs.
