Crafting Art Exhibition and Studio Spaces Inspired by Suprematism. Envision an art exhibition and studio space that revitalizes Kazimir Malevich’s groundbreaking 0.10 exhibition and Suprematism. The challenge is to design a space that goes beyond conventional limits, nurturing creativity, innovation, and a sense of community for both artists and visitors

Issue

The core of this competition is the pressing need to develop transformative spaces that do more than merely showcase art—they must capture the radical essence of Malevich’s work, offering a vibrant environment that inspires and captivates. These spaces should go beyond traditional galleries, fostering a sense of creativity, community, and engagement. This project seeks to merge practicality with avant-garde artistry, crafting a venue that becomes an integral part of the artistic experience, creating an atmosphere where visitors feel connected to the art and the innovative spirit of Malevich.

Objective

The objective of this architectural competition is to challenge participants to design an innovative art exhibition and studio space that channels the bold, geometric simplicity and spiritual intensity of Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematism. The space should be a living, breathing part of the art, facilitating creation, display, and interaction. Participants are encouraged to think beyond conventional gallery norms, creating a space that is both a canvas and a catalyst for artistic expression.

Site

The competition site covers an area of up to 1000 square meters, situated in the culturally rich heart of Petrograd (modern-day St. Petersburg). This prime location provides convenient access to various cultural landmarks and amenities, making it an ideal central hub for artistic activities. Participants are encouraged to design their spaces in harmony with the urban context of the site, enhancing its potential to become a focal point for the city’s artistic community.

Constraints

Design solutions must capture the essence of Suprematism, emphasizing bold geometric forms, minimalistic aesthetics, and an innovative use of space that reflects Malevich’s radical vision.
Create versatile spaces that can be reconfigured to host a variety of artistic practices and exhibitions. Movable walls, modular installations, and multi-purpose areas are key.
Incorporate natural and artificial lighting, along with acoustics, to enhance art displays and support diverse artistic activities.
The designs must be resilient to varying environmental conditions, including but not limited to extreme weather, limited resources, and potential security challenges.
Design areas that encourage interaction and collaboration among artists and visitors. Communal workshops, public art projects, and interactive installations can foster a vibrant community spirit.
Ensure the design respects and enhances the cultural and historical fabric of Petrograd. Integrate elements that reflect the city’s rich artistic heritage while pushing the boundaries of contemporary design.
