Lima is undergoing a continuous change even though its biggest contradiction remains unchanged: a three meters wall that runs over ten kilometers separates people of different social states. Thus, on one side of the wall, the barren landscape dominates, showing no green areas and only a few streets. This area is barely/rarely reached with water supply and electricity, and many small houses have been manually built, up to the top of the mountain. Conversely, on the other side of the wall luxury residences can be seen surrounded by thriving vegetation, in addition to pools, high rises and many infrastructures for the population. The division is strong.

By trying to improve internal safety, people follow the logic of exclusion.

Techo Peru is a non-profit association aimed at reducing poverty that affects millions of people in Peru by employing the combined action of the young volunteers and inhabitants.
DNADD and Techo share the same mission: transform the Right to Housing in the right of living in a decent house. Develop a new type of house that should be easily reproduced, satisfy the basic needs of Lima’s population and offer them a new place worthy to be called “home”.

Techo Peru aims at tackling this problem in Peru, providing a model of house which is donated to those families living in the most extreme conditions.
This competition proposes a redesign of the Techo’s model with the aim of improving those features of the house that are impaired at the moment.

Participants should develop a housing unit that is obtained from the combination of four different modules: family module, kitchen, bathroom, garden. After having evaluated the conditions of the houses owned by each family, it will be decided whether to build the entire house “ex novo” or just add the missing modules.

The house should be developed so that it can be self-constructed in a few days by volunteers.

DNADD is a nonprofit association, therefore the competition is based on a fund-raising formula, necessary for the construction of the project in Lima, Peru.

Today the housing deficit in Peru reaches 1.8 million, 20.9 quantitative and 79.1% qualitative and, besides, 70% of the houses are built without the assistance of either an architect or an engineer. Do you want to be part of the change?
