The ‘India Next’ competition aims to seek urban and rural solutions/interventions that are veered to ‘society’ and strive to create and/or retain beauty. It aims to give a platform to ideas by practices and professionals who are intensely engaged in making the development experience meaningful, responsible, sustainable and inclusive. Facilitating beauty not only on the exterior but in the make and form of the infrastructure is of utmost importance. It also entails making more intelligent use of technology, people and resources for improved urban& rural management. This should be the future: the city/village as a community, a smart vision for ‘India Next’.

Is it technology, good design or something else? Even if an idea takes into account all these factors, how does one adjudge ‘smartness’? A digital navigation map makes complete sense in an upscale neighbourhood in London but renders itself pointless in an arid African settlement. Some defined boundaries are required to guide the creation of Smart cities. In the imagination of any resident of India, the picture of ‘smart’ development contains a wish list of infrastructure and services that describes his or her level of aspiration for immediate vicinity.

Based on strategies of Retrofitting, Redevelopment, Greenfield development and Pan-city development, the following focus areas have been earmarked under the ‘India Next’-Urban challenge:

  • Promoting mixed land use in area-based developments — planning for ‘unplanned areas’ containing a range of compatible activities and land uses close to one another in order to make land use more efficient.
  • Housing and inclusiveness — expand housing opportunities for all.
  • Creating walkable localities — reduce congestion, air pollution and resource depletion, boost local economy, promote interactions and ensure security.
  • Preserving and developing open spaces — parks, playgrounds, and recreational spaces in order to enhance the quality of life of citizens, reduce the urban heat effects in areas and generally promote eco-balance.
  • Promoting a variety of transport options — Transit Oriented Development (TOD), public transport and last mile para-transport connectivity.
  • Giving an identity to the city — based on its main economic activity, such as local cuisine, health, education, arts and craft, culture, sports goods, furniture, hosiery, textile, dairy, etc.
  • Applying Smart Solutions to infrastructure and services in area-based development in order to make them better. For example, making areas less vulnerable to disasters, using fewer resources, and providing cheaper services.

With an aim to reduce disparity in rural and urban development, the Government of India recently launched its Smart Villages initiative. Inspired by this vision to deliver development ideas to our villages, the ‘India Next’-Rural challenge will seek to identify rural issues stemming from illiteracy, poverty or lack of access to urban amenities and find specific, effective, long terms solutions. The ‘India Next’-Rural challenge calls for ideas as solutions with regards to the following core infrastructure elements of our villages:

  • Housing (Affordable, resilient, disaster proof, environment friendly)
  • School and college upgradation
  • Skill development training centres
  • Efficient mobility and public transport (intra and inter village)
  • Street infrastructure
  • Water management
  • Sanitation and waste management
