International Design Competition for the Korean Museum of Urbanism and Architecture

Context and Objectives

The Korean Museum of Urbanism and Architecture (KMUA) aims to become a center of archive, exhibition, education, and research for urbanism and architecture. KMUA will also serve as a promoter of cultural awareness in urbanism and architecture for the general public, with goals of contributing to the betterment of the nation’s urbanism and architecture by establishing a national identity for Korea’s architecture and cities.

KMUA parts from collection-centered museums of the past and moves toward a new direction of a “dynamic museum” that can sustain evolution and growth by accumulating and producing various contents through linking its archive, exhibition, education and research activities.

The purpose of this international competition is to select the best architectural design for the establishment of the Korean Museum of Urbanism and Architecture, making it Korea’s representative institution for urbanism, architecture, and their public discourse.

Participation is open to any architect of domestic and overseas.

Holders of foreign licenses should establish a firm in Korea or form a consortium with Korean licensee who already has such a firm before applying for the competition. The representative member of a consortium should be the one who has established a firm in Korea. This firm will be the main contractor should it win the competition.

A consortium may consist of up to five members and should register one of its members appointed as the representative member of the team.

If a team advances to stage two of the competition, changes may be made to any non-representative members.

Any steering committee member of the KMUA, any members of the Jury Committee, and the Technical Committee of this competition, any employees of the firm such members work for, and any other persons concerned with this competition may not participate.
