The Estonian Institute of Historical Memory has launched an international design competition to find the best designs for an international museum of the crimes of communism, which is to be established in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. The objective of the design competition is to find a contemporary, attractive and visitor-friendly design for the museum’s architecture, exposition and interior design.

This museum is one of a kind in the world. The plan is to establish it on the shore of the Gulf of Finland right in Tallinn’s city centre in the Patarei complex, which is under cultural heritage protection.

The Patarei complex is one of Europe’s largest intact classicist style military installations. The museum is planned to an approximately 5,000 square meter area in the eastern part of the building, with authentic prison cells, an execution chamber, corridors, a prison lean with prisoners’ walkways and much more. The exposition of the planned museum introduces the causes of and crimes committed by communist regimes on a multi-level basis: from a global scale, the focus moves to the events in Europe, and finally to a more detailed overview of local history under communist rule.

Prizes: 40,000 euros are allocated for the competition’s awards, which is divided up as follows:

1st Prize 15,000 euros

2nd Prize 10,000 euros

3rd Prize 5,000 euros

The amount of 10,000 euros is allocated to be awarded as special prizes by decision of the jury, taking into account results of the plebiscite.
