Results: Reusing Rooftops Barcelona 2024

Reusing Rooftops, in collaboration with the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, announces the winners of its latest international architecture competition, which focused on transforming urban rooftops into sustainable, functional spaces that enhance urban living, promote sustainability, and provide new social and recreational spaces in densely populated cities.

The first prize was awarded to a team from Colombia, consisting of Matías Molina, Alejandro Montaña, Pablo Ávila, and Andres Acosta. Their project was praised for allowing each individual apartment block to convert its rooftop into a green roof with activities, making it easier to implement one block at a time. The design excels in sustainability, utilizing circular resource systems, solar facades, and water reuse, while balancing social and environmental values.

The second prize went to Tristan Boltz from France. The third prize was awarded to Vu Nguyen, Nguyen Ton, and Khoa Pham from Vietnam. Both teams presented innovative designs that impressed the jury with their unique approaches to sustainable rooftop transformations.

Special Mention “Soprema” was given to Mariano Macchione, Facundo Montiel, and Ignacio Pérez from Spain, and Special Mention “Sika” was awarded to Luigi Castelli Gattinara from Italy. The partnering brands recognized these projects for their outstanding contributions and creative solutions.

Reusing Rooftops is an initiative by Archstorming aimed at transforming urban rooftops into useful spaces that enhance the quality of life for city dwellers by promoting sustainability and providing innovative social and recreational opportunities.

1ST PLACE

Matías Molina, Alejandro Montaña, Pablo Ávila, Andres Acosta
Colombia

About the First Prize – Joan Batlle – Partner at Batlleiroig
What I like most about this project is that it allows each individual apartment block to convert its rooftop into a green roof with activities. This provides a great margin for the proposal to be realistic since it is much easier to convince individual apartment blocks one by one rather than entire Eixample blocks.

About the First Prize – Elisabeth Contreras – Vicepresident at ASESCUVE
An original project that takes into account social and environmental values. Very interesting. I believe that the concepts need to be further developed and the proposals should be thoroughly studied to ensure its viability in an Eixample block.

About the First Prize – Cas Esbach – Architect at MVRDV
This project deeply focuses on sustainability and the benefits of using rooftops for sustainable purposes. From circular resource utilization systems to solar facades and the reuse of water, the project excels in its exploration of sustainability.

2ND PLACE

Tristan Boltz
France

About the Second Prize – Lorenzo Fernández-Ordóñez – Cofounder of Porras Guadiana
One of the things I like most about this project is that it is conceived as a system rather than a closed project. This is fantastic as it allows for its incorporation into different realities and circumstances.

About the Second Prize – Joan Batlle – Partner at Batlleiroig
Of all the projects that build on the rooftop, this one stands out for being one of the lightest, ensuring that the original roof structure is not compromised and creating very interesting spaces.

About the Second Prize – Cas Esbach – Architect at MVRDV
The work behind this project is exceptional. The definition of each space, including construction details, as well as the focus on sustainability, incorporating solar energy, water reuse, and a vegetation system, makes it a great project.

3RD PLACE

Vu Nguyen, Nguyen Ton, Khoa Pham
Vietnam

About the Third Prize – Cas Esbach – Architect at MVRDV
The approach of this project is brilliant and especially innovative. It uses a playful method by creating an app that connects society with the various activities happening on the rooftop. Special mention to the main render they used simulating a model, which is not only beautiful but also helps to understand the project perfectly.

About the Third Prize – Lorenzo Fernández-Ordóñez – Cofounder of Porras Guadiana
I really like this project because it makes a myriad of small interventions, which give the rooftop space a very dynamic quality. It is also appreciated that it considers details such as fauna, specifically birds, and how they can cohabit the space.
