This international one-stage architecture ideas competition invites all architecture and landscape architecture students, young architects and landscape architects, young professionals with a degree in architecture studies or landscape architecture studies (≤ 40 years old) to develop and submit compelling ideas for the design of a Site Shelter located at the ‘Nossa Senhora da Luz’ Fortress in Peniche, Portugal.

The ‘Nossa Senhora da Luz’ Fortress is a significant landmark located within a remarkable place; a powerful natural scenery where traces from the Fortress emerge from the landscape and together with the cliff surfaces eroded by wind and the immensity of the ocean are notable features within this setting.

When generating a vision for an intervention located within such a remarkable place, it is essential that each design proposal emphasises, respects and celebrates the site and existing ruins, while provide a unique and memorable experience.

SITE SHELTER

The Site Shelter is an embodied experience of air, light, sound and temperature through movement and places of rest; meandering through exterior and interior shelter, between contrasts of shade, shadow and light. An open-air permeable museum for visitors to engage with the history, the land and the ocean. It is a sheltered place for the existing ruins and visitors alike, offering a unique experience within this remarkable landscape; a contemplative passage through place, time and memory.
Entrance
Provide a space of transition between the natural landscape and the Site Shelter.
Permanent exhibition area
Area/s designated as sheltered space/s for the existing archaeological remains; it can be a singular space or a sequence of spaces, open and / or enclosed to the natural elements.
Resting / Viewing
Provide areas to rest, allowing visitors to experience time and memory.
Information area
Area providing visitors with general information about the history of the site; open and / or enclosed to the natural elements.
Landscape / Exterior requirements
Provide pedestrian paths inviting visitors to meander between open spaces and enclosed outdoor environments.
