For this competition, we thus invite interior designs which look at the café as a place filled with unique possibilities to forge social and cultural connections. We invite participants to send us their take on the design of the café interior, set in the site of their choice.

Cafés or coffee shops have been a dynamic public place in cities across the world since centuries. Historically known for their social and cultural significance, cafés provide visitors with a place to congregate, talk, read, write and entertain. Cafés tell the story of not only food, but also people and places. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was in spaces like the café, where local news, political ideas, current events and gossip were exchanged by people. During historically significant times, like the Enlightenment or the Renaissance, cafés were a common place where poets, artists, writers, andthinkers assembled. From the historic cities of Paris in the west, to Turkey in the east, cafés became a site to generate new waves of thought in philosophy, art and culture. Cafés were important nodes in the urban fabric, injecting a sense of vibrancy in social and cultural relationships, outside the home and workplace.

Fast forward to the 21st century, in a world of WiFi, tablets, laptops and social media, the culture of visiting cafés has changed in significant ways, but remains just as intriguing a place for a conversation and networking. From casual meeting, and dating, to solo working or meeting for business, the café is a dynamic and irreplaceable place in themodern city.

Eligibility

The competition is open to participants creating new designs for the brief; or uploading projects they might have done earlier in their academic or professional careers. We urge designers to unwind back, and think through their earlier projects, and ask if their designs address the above ideas of a café.
