Home is not a place; it is a feeling. The competition aims to provide humane living conditions for transient construction workers in India. Tocreate successful housing for construction workers, they must feel that they are rooted in a given place. They should be able to experience a sense of community with their neighbors though they stay for a short time and change of families as per the construction demand. The design should foster a sense of community and participation.
The housing colony has to be designed for 200 laborers. 40 units for a family of 3 adults and a child with basic amenities like sleeping area for 3 adults with adequate privacy, storage including a kitchen.20 units for bachelors shared by 3 adults. A separate communal cooking area has to be designed for bachelors. The colony should accommodate common toilets, clothes washing and drying areas, medical rooms, and shops for essentials. A multipurpose activity center of 1500 sft should be able to adapt itself into a crèche or a playschool during the day, workshop or a training center for the younger age group to develop skills to become a plumber, electrician, fabricator, carpenter or mason, a place for social gatherings or TV watching/ entertainment hub. Drinking water facilities and sanitation are integral to the colony.
“Dismantle and reassemble” units of size 100 sft with a maximum height of 12’ each has to be designed. The module has to be easy to dismantle, assemble, and transportable in a truck.The module has to be stackable, grow vertically up to G+2 floors in a compact site situation, or spread out horizontally up to G+1 on a larger site.The module should be scalable, flexible, and adaptable to house various activities.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
We invite all students to join the competition and present their ideas. Participants are free to submit multiple entries but each to be registered separately. Alongside individual entries, team entries of maximum 3 participants are allowed. The team can also mention a mentor if any. They can be practicing professionals or educators. Interdisciplinary teams are also welcome to join. Participant must be a student of an Under Graduate program only.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
The submissions should be in the form of A3 sheets. The sheets to be compiled in a single pdf and submitted by logging in on the website. Proposal may be presented using any technique of your choice (sketches, diagrams, 3D visualization, model photos, CAD drawings, etc) to be submitted by uploading online (no links accepted). The files can be zipped and uploaded. Maximum file size to be 10mb. Bottom right corner of each sheet must have a name plate.
