Imagine sipping organic wine while watching the sunset over the mountains of the green Umbrian valley. This is the experience that Buildner and Tili Vini winery are looking to create with the Tili Wine Italy Guest Homes competition. Participants are tasked with creating a collection of five guest homes to be located on the property of Tili Vini Italy, a boutique winery that produces a range of high-quality organic wines and oils. The guest homes would need to be able to accommodate up to five couples at a time, promoting and encouraging visitors to take part in the wine tasting experiences available at the vineyard.

Tili Vini Heritage

The Tili winery exports around 90,000–100,000 bottles a year to wine lovers in Japan, USA, Denmark, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, and Sweden. The winery itself sits across the hills that flank the town of Assisi in Italy, a land rich in history, peaceful saints, and a centuries-old tradition of wine and oil.

The Tili family’s heritage dates back hundreds of years, first arriving in the region from Northern Europe as far back as 1200 CE. In the centuries since then, the family has cultivated its land with love and hard work, creating a location where they can grow the best fruit to create traditional, organic wines and oils. Since 1978, the current owners have continued bottling the family’s traditional wine and oil products, with techniques passed down through the generations. It was the family’s dream to make their wine available to wine enthusiasts from even the most remote corners of the world, and passionate commitment and tenacious research is making that dream come true.

The Competition

The main purpose of the Tili Wine Italy Guest Homes would be to promote wine tasting tours and experiences of the Tili Vini organic products. The building complex would need to be sustainable and environmentally conscious on all levels – from construction up to (and including) potential building operation strategies. Participants are asked to design space that would accommodate up to five couples at a time. Each guest house should be around 70 m2 and would need to have a lounge zone/living room, bedroom, and bathroom, as well as a small kitchenette, and luggage storage. Participants may propose a single guest house prototype to be replicated on the site or five different buildings. In order to promote a greater interaction with nature, the Tili Vini owners suggest that participants explore approaches that blend the boundaries between external and internal areas. In addition to the five guest houses, participants are also asked to think about designs for a small wine tasting area that would function as a centerpoint for all guests to gather in and enjoy the wineyard’s products. For this, a common kitchen and dining room is required. All of these functions may interact with each other but it is not required for their zoning to be strictly separated. Participants are also requested to propose designs for an outdoor area in which guests could gather and mingle. This could include a natural pool, garden, terrace or similar. As the Tili Vini owners are planning construction, winning design concepts should communicate the owners’ heritage, as well as their business philosophy – a love of winemaking and being in harmony with nature.
