Reuse Italy embraces for the first time the mission of the reuse of the early XX century built heritage. Together with Dropcity, we launch an International Idea Competition to reuse the tunnels of the Magazzini Raccordati of the Stazione Centrale of Milano.
The competition is divided into two phases. During the first phase, we welcome applications from architects/engineers/designers/ students who are passionate about urban regeneration and the topic of reuse, eager to take part to the contest.
After a selection, ten applications will be chosen to develop a design idea for reusing the tunnels during the second phase. All the 10 finalists will be awarded. At the end of the contest, the finalists’ projects will be displayed at an exhibition during Il Salone del Mobile, and later published in a book.
The Magazzini Raccordati of the Stazione Centrale of Milano are more than 100 years old. They consist of more than 100 tunnels, for an total surfare of round 40,000 square meters, distributed along two kilometers, in between Via Ferrante Aporti and Via Sammartini. The decorations of the façade, belonging to the late Art Nouveau style, are displayed in both the concrete stucture and the iron portals, with a similar language of those of the Stazione Centrale. In 2018, the project Dropcity was conceived to reuse 10000 square meters as a new centre for Architecture and Design. The reuse of a portion of this tunnels aims to trigger the requalification of the entire complex, still without an idea of functions and design strategy. The selected participants to this competition are asked to provide ideas to rethinck the tunnels of the Magazzini Raccordati.
