Beylikdüzü Municipality has announced “Valley of Life International Competition” in Beylikdüzü district in Istanbul. The competition is searching innovative and sustainable ideas for the development of the valley in Beylikdüzü. Competitors are invited to develop visionary concepts that focus on the whole valley and on the focal points determined. These concept descriptions should include an operational idea for the area and a description of the ecological corridor with transportation connections, bicycle routes, services, functionalities etc.

The competition is open to international professionals (urban planners, architects and landscape architects) who submits portfolio entry complying with the instructions in competition announcement. The competition entries should be written in English.

OBJECTIVE OF THE COMPETITION

“Beylikdüzü Valley of Life International Competition” aims to decide on a general planning and design approach for the Valley of Life; to eliminate problems arising due to significant focal points and their access roads in accordance with current needs, expectations and feasibilities; to highlight economical, unique and qualified design approaches, as well as functional and innovative solutions which could provide insight into today’s architecture; to determine project owners and projects with a contemporary environmental and architectural approach; to promote fine arts and related professions, to reinforce ethical values and to provide architectural teams with an appropriate environment allowing them to gain competitive abilities at the international level.

TYPE AND THE FORMAT OF THE COMPETITION

Valley of Life is an international, two-stage competition.
Preliminary Stage: Qualification; selection of five teams for participation. Second Stage: Selection of the Winner among five teams.

This competition is organized by the Municipality of Beylikdüzü, in accordance with the Article 23 of the Public Procurement Law No 4734, within the frame of the Regulations for Competitions of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Urban Design Projects, Urban Planning and Works of Fine Art; as an international, symbiotic project competition with a preliminary stage. The scope of the competition involves issues requiring collaboration of multiple disciplines and/or fields of art (planning (urban and landscape), urban design, landscape architecture, architecture)

LOCATION AND THE SUBJECT OF THE COMPETITION

The project site is the Valley of Life, located within the Beylikdüzü district, İstanbul. The aim of the competition is to find solutions for the spatial problems and to meet the needs of the Valley of Life, a rare valley with preserved natural resources, using an integrative approach conforming with large-scale plans and by taking its significant identity into account.

PRIZES

Winning participants of the second stage will receive cash prizes totaling 160,000 EUR. The design jury will meet in June of 2016, to select winning projects and honorable mentions. Winners will be notified of the competition results directly. A list of winning projects will be posted on the official website of the municipality (www.beylikduzu.bel.tr) and the facebook page of the competition. The projects will be presented in an exhibition for the next month and open to public. Finally, the awards will be selected:

1st Prize: 40,000 EUR / each team, totally 1 team
2nd Prize: 30,000 EUR / each team, totally 1 team
3rd Prize: 30,000 EUR / each team, totally 1 team
Honorable Mention Prize: 30,000 EUR / each team, totally 2 teams

The competition’s first stage result will be announced by 1 March 2016. Any entry should be delivered by 25 February or earlier to be qualified. Competition entries must be delivered to the address below before the deadline for entries. The sender will cover the costs of postage.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR PRE- SELECTION

IDENTIFICATION FILE

For applications from Turkey, a member identification document from TMMOB (the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects) Chamber of Urban Planners, Chamber of Architects and Chamber of Landscape Architects; bearing the title of the competition.

For applications from abroad, a member identification document from the chamber / union in the applicant’s country; equivalent of TMMOB (the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects) Chamber of Urban Planners, Chamber of Architects and Chamber of Landscape Architects of Turkey.

Each member of the competing team must be included in a list. A signed copy of the “Attestation Letter” included in the Appendix of the Regulations must be included in the identification file.

PORTFOLIO (BOOKLET İN A3 FORMAT)

The portfolio must include 3 (three) reference projects for each of the different disciplines in the team (urban planner, architect and landscape architect) and bear the name of the competition, the title “Preliminary File” and full names of the team members on the cover page.

There should be a project information section on the first page of each project.
A printed copy of the portfolio should be sent to the contact address of the competition.

The jury expects the reference projects to contain the following information:

• Name of the project

• Location / position of the project

• Year / stage of the project

• The design context

• Functions

• Name of the commissioner

RECEIPT OF PAYMENT FOR PRELIMINARY APPLICATION
The competitors must pay the application fee (100 TL) to the bank account given in the Contact Information section. The scanned receipt showing that the payment for the preliminary application fee should be sent via e-mail to the e-mail address “valleyoflife@beylikduzu.bel.tr”
