YACADEMY

With 15 Pritzker laureates- the “Nobels” of architecture-on its panel of lecturers, YACademy is the world’s first postgraduate institute resulting from the relationship and collaboration among the most distinguished firms in contemporary architecture. From the definition of the programs to teaching, all aspects are curated by the greatest architectural studios of our time. Thanks to the collaboration with renowned professional practices, YACademy is the ideal context in which to complete or update one’s skills and boost one’s career through the connection with the most important firms on the international scene.

YACademy’s educational program is one of the most comprehensive and fascinating didactic experiences in the world. It is the result of years of experimentation and interaction between great masters of architecture. Each course comprises numerous educational formats offering an experience that can make the difference in young designers’ personal and professional careers.

THE COURSE

Architects have always been asked to breathe new life into ancient architectures inherited from the past or into historical – often monumental – artifacts that no longer respond to the customs and needs of the contemporary society.

Nevertheless, the ancient architectures tell our story, therefore deserve to be restored with interventions that bring along a hint of modernity and show the trace of the design activity.

The “Architecture for Heritage” course has been created on these premises. Its aim is training designers who will be able to understand and enhance the memory of historical architectures and take inspiration from them to carry out new interventions that both meet the new needs and are enriched by the link to the past. In a close dialogue between the ancient and the modern, between existing architectures and new interventions, it is possible to comprehend what has been and what is now, redesigning – through architecture – a historical line bound to be continued by future generations.

The students will learn about the most advanced survey strategies and redesign of historical architecture; therefore, they will be able to protect the ancient wonders without giving up on a contemporary approach to the project. They will acquire skills and experience in a field of design that is always present and offers continuous and valuable job opportunities.

The students will analyze the technical and compositional strategies to adopt in contexts that host outstanding existing architectures through the intervention on archaeological and industrial sites and focusing mainly on the accommodation and cultural use of historical buildings. The course will be made up of 80 hours of lessons, a 32-hour workshop, and multiple lectures by well-renowned professional architects. At the end of the course, YACademy Placement office will guarantee each student a proposal for an internship/collaboration within the partner studios.

The course is made of a teaching module of 80 hours, a 32-hours design and construction workshop, several special lectures, site visits and a period of internship/collaboration with one of the entities belonging to YACademy’s network.

WORKSHOP

CONTEMPORARY RUINS: Re-design an ancient village in the Umbrian countryside

Giuseppe Zampieri | David Chipperfield Architects Milano

The workshop will be the practical opportunity to test all the notions provided during the teaching modules. It will guarantee strategic solutions to a real architectural project. The workshop will be conducted in collaboration with Monacelli Italy and it will be oriented to the design of a training and research center dedicated to the neuro-sciences in San Bartolomeo. Lying on the slopes of the Marinello hill, close to the Tevere River valley, San Bartolomeo is located in the complex of the larger Castle of Solfagnano: a marvel of the 12th century with important eighteenth-century contaminations, which still captures the visitor’s heart for its monumental magnificence. Some of the characteristic elements of one of the most fascinating places in the central part of Italy are the mighty bulwarks containing an amazing garden, bridges and paths that bring to a monumental park. In close contact with the most iconic image of Medieval Italy, with the city of Assisi and San Francesco and the amazing cities of Gubbio and Perugia – students will have the opportunity to deal with a site with a deep historical connotation, but that at the same time requires a strong contemporary intervention aimed – like it is – to the future.

CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP

Construction is a fundamental step in architecture. For this reason, YACademy offers its students the opportunity to participate in the process of producing their own ideas. Thus, the students will gain practical experience on construction sites and, above all, the authorship of projects built for excellent commissions, destined for a major media echo and capable of defining a turning point in their professional career.

SITE VISITS

SAN BARTOLOMEO, THE CASTLE OF SOLFAGNANO, AND ASSISI

In line with the topic of the workshop, the students will have the opportunity to visit the buildings of San Bartolomeo, the Castle of Solfagnano and its complex, completing the visit with a short trip to the town of Assisi.

BOLOGNA

In line with the module “Typological Research and Restoration” students will have the opportunity to visit with the professor some of the most important historical buildings in Bologna that show the theory and practice of restoration: Palazzo Bevilacqua, Fondazione Zeri, Cappella Ghisilardi.

VENICE AND PROCURATIE VECCHIE

In combination with the module “Urbanistic Revolution of the Historical City”, students together with the professor will have the opportunity to visit the city of Venice. During the tour and thanks to the collaboration of David Chipperfield Architects, students will visit Procuratie Vecchie in order to see the restoration work narrated by the architects involved in the project.

THE INTERVENTION OF G124 BY RENZO PIANO IN MODENA

Concurrently with the module “Suburban Scenarios” students will have the opportunity to visit the results of the interventions done by G124 of Renzo Piano in XXV April Square, touching with their hands an interesting example of urban re-activation thanks to micro-architecture interventions.

INTERNSHIP/COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES

To conclude the course, each student will carry out a period of collaboration with one of YACademy’s partner firms. Such collaboration will have a minimum duration of 2 months and guaranteed remuneration consistently with regulatory requirements. It will aim to perfect students’ skills, offering the rare opportunity to work and interact with some of the world’s leading firms. By enriching their experience through internships and collaborations, students will have a real chance to build a solid network of relationships, useful for accelerating and turning their career around.

Hereby follow some of the professional players with the greatest expertise in relation to the course topic:
