YACADEMY

With 15 Pritzker laureates- the “Nobels” of architecture-on its panel of lecturers, YACademy is the world’s first postgraduate institute resulting from the relationship and collaboration among the most distinguished firms in contemporary architecture. From the definition of the programs to teaching, all aspects are curated by the greatest architectural studios of our time. Thanks to the collaboration with renowned professional practices, YACademy is the ideal context in which to complete or update one’s skills and boost one’s career through the connection with the most important firms on the international scene.

YACademy’s educational program is one of the most comprehensive and fascinating didactic experiences in the world. It is the result of years of experimentation and interaction between great masters of architecture. Each course comprises numerous educational formats offering an experience that can make the difference in young designers’ personal and professional careers.

THE COURSE

Cinema and science fiction have accustomed us to perceiving space research as something remote. Yet, 50 years after the last human landing on the Moon, a renewed interest in space has driven a group of international partners to return to our satellite through the Artemis program, in November 2022.

Humans are expected to walk on the Moon again by 2025. After that, the Moon will become the most important scientific base of humankind. In all likelihood, the most significant scientific discoveries of the coming decades will take place there.

In this remarkable scenario, architects will play a key role.

For the first time in history, humanity is concretely being called upon to evolve as an interplanetary species. The colonization of any ecosystem or environment needs habitats and identity-giving places: it needs architecture.

For this reason, in collaboration with the European Space Agency’s Topical Team on Planetary Caves, the course in Space Architecture was established to train the new pioneers of architecture, designers with a heroic and experimental mission: making human history by writing the future of the first extraterrestrial architectures.

ESA, NASA and SpaceX: specializing in space architecture today means being the first architects to acquire specific skills and a competitive advantage in a disruptive field, which will offer extraordinary opportunities and significant investment in the near future.

The course is made of a teaching module of 80 hours, a 32-hours design and construction workshop, several special lectures, site visits and a period of internship/collaboration with one of the entities belonging to YACademy’s network.

WORKSHOP

MOON RESEARCH LAB: DESIGNING A LUNAR RESEARCH STATION

Giulio Rigoni, Julian Ocampo Salazar | BIG – BJARKE INGELS GROUP

The workshop will be the practical opportunity to test all the notions provided during the teaching modules and will guarantee strategic solutions to a real architectural project. It will be conducted in collaboration with the European Space Agency’s Topical Team on Planetary Caves. Its goal will be to investigate the possibilities of developing analysis and research modules within lunar pits. Result of the collapse of portions of lava tubes underlying the lunar surface, such holes provide access to a vast system of tunnels and galleries that reasonably are the safest context in which to place the first human garrisons in the extraterrestrial environment. In the tunnels of our satellite, the human settlement would be sheltered from the extreme temperature ranges of the surface and the lethal radiation that periodically invests the Moon due to the absence of atmosphere. Here, the first human bases will be able to grow and develop as the foundation of future colonies. Through the workshop, students will have the opportunity not only to grapple with an exciting and visionary topic – constantly monitored by experts in the field – but also to contribute to the theoretical solution of challenges that design in the extraterrestrial sphere will necessarily face.

CONTRUCTION WORKSHOP

Construction is a fundamental step in architecture. For this reason, YACademy offers its students the opportunity to participate in the process of producing their own ideas. Thus, the students will gain practical experience on construction sites and, above all, the authorship of projects built for excellent commissions, destined for a major media echo and capable of defining a turning point in their professional career.

SITE VISITS

WASP RESEARCH LAB (Massa Lombarda)

In line with the workshop topic, students will be given the opportunity to visit the headquarters of WASP, one of the leading companies operating in the field of construction through 3D printing. By visiting the company students will be able to understand the nature and methodologies of 3D printing, which is one of the main possibilities for construction in extraterrestrial contexts.

AQUAPONIC DESIGN RESEARCH LAB (Bologna)

Concurrently with the module in “Growing in Extreme Environments,” students will have the opportunity to be taken to AquaponicDesign’s facilities and thus experience firsthand the characteristics and methods of growing in the absence of soil.

FRASASSI CAVES

In line with the workshop topic, students will be given the opportunity to visit the Frasassi caves, among the most majestic and magnificent caves in Europe. Thanks to such visit, students will be able to get to know and understand the characteristics of the underground environment.

INTERNSHIP/COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES

To conclude the course, each student will carry out a period of collaboration with one of YACademy’s partner firms. Such collaboration will have a minimum duration of 2 months and guaranteed remuneration consistently with regulatory requirements. It will aim to perfect students’ skills, offering the rare opportunity to work and interact with some of the world’s leading firms. By enriching their experience through internships and collaborations, students will have a real chance to build a solid network of relationships, useful for accelerating and turning their career around.
