Archstorming, an architectural platform that organizes international humanitarian competitions, has released the results for The Earth School Competition. In this competition, participants were challenged to design a school for the NGO Kakolum. Schools in Casamance are temporary structures, mostly made of straw, mud or scraps of aluminium, in which students sit on the ground and teachers rarely have a desk or chair. The NGO has been working on the reconstruction of schools in the area, and now they have decided to build a new one in the beach town of Kafountine.

In this crucial moment of environmental crisis; with unaffordable housing for most of the planet’s population; we should consider living small, minimalist, and lovingly more connected to nature. We’re in a period of adaptive exploration within sustainable living. Downsizing to tiny off-grid housing with real human-nature connections is becoming requisite.

We were looking for interesting designs for this community to be connected, self-sustained, and to have a minimalist lifestyle.

The EUROPAN 13 competition –a European competition of urban and architectural projects leading to implementation, conducted in partnership with European municipalities, local authorities and clients– was organised as a joint initiative by 15 European structures. This session topic was: The Adaptable City: Self-Organization – Sharing – Project (Process). The participating cities were confronted to the major challenges concerning the adaptability of European cities: adaptation to the need for more sustainable development but also to the context of an economic crisis that most of the European cities are currently undergoing. They also proposed concrete innovations in the order given by the site representatives, arousing new project approaches by young competitors.
