The challenge is to design an outdoor art school that explores the intensity of architecture to direct experience through multi-sensory design interventions. The place will be an informal institute that will offer to learn to aspiring artists. It will be a meeting hub for artists across the city, for networking and exhibition of their works. Mies’s drawings, letters and articles are all well preserved. All these pieces are safe and sound. However, there’s a difference between preservation and celebration, and we believe Mies’s work deserve to be celebrated. For the sake of this challenge, we are going to consider that the IIT is planning to make a move to bring many of those pieces back to its campus to establish the new “Mies Memorial Library”. A building not only meant to preserve, but also to celebrate the life, works and contributions of one of the founding fathers of modern architecture. A building that will look into the future without forgetting the past. A building capable of encouraging young architects to be ambitious and remind the established ones to never settle. A building which this brief, if you choose to do so, invites you to envision and design.

An international design competition launched today by the Pritzker Military Museum & Library located in Chicago, invites designers to submit design concepts for the new Cold War Veterans Memorial in Somers, Wisconsin. This Memorial will be a critical piece of the Pritzker Archives and Memorial Park Center (PAMPC) currently under development. Design submissions will be accepted until June 15, 2021.

Chicago Sukkah Expo ’16 is a national design competition that challenges entrants to re-imagine the Sukkah. The sukkah, a temporary structure that is built during the Jewish festival of Sukkot commemorates the 40 years that Jews spent wandering the desert (Leviticus 23:42-43). The impermanence of the sukkah reminds us that many community members do not have adequate shelter and are threatened by the dangers of homelessness.
