Ladakh Ecological Development Group (LEDeG) under ‘Liveable Leh’, a project funded by the European Union and supported by BORDA (Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association) and GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), is currently working towards achieving an inclusive, resilient and liveable Himalayan city. The main focus of the project is to mitigate Climate Change and also to achieve Sustainable Development Goals 6 (clean water and sanitation) and 11 (sustainable cities and communities). As a part of this initiative, LEDeG is launching a Global Design Competition on solutions to resolve problems in high-altitude towns, under Work Package 4.8 of the Liveable Leh project. We are very happy to announce that reTHINKING competitions has just launched the new contest #017 Global Warming Center. The ice shelf or sea in the Arctic region is crucial in maintaining the global climate due to its reflectivity. The melting of this ice can also increase global warming due to positive feedback effects, where warming generates more heat as solar absorption increases. The loss of this layer of ice can represent a turning point in global warming, when the ‘decontrol’ of climate change starts.

Not all winter cities are alike. Some have repeated months of below freezing temperatures and predictable snow accumulation, while others face high variability and frequent freeze/thaw cycles. The latter cities may experience 100 or more freeze/thaw cycles a year, creating unique challenges for public space use, outdoor event planning, roadway maintenance, and infrastructure design.
