Counter-territories is an international urban and art competition and project with a research orientation to encourage local architects, artists, researchers and creative practitioners to work and network with international architects and professionals, to re-read and critically understand the current planning and geographic situation of our cities and territories by focusing on its social and cultural contexts, by using (counter-mapping) methodologies to re-documenting and re-drawing cultural and socio-spatial phenomena that are usually not visible in official maps, including the suspended, excluded and silenced phenomena, the dynamics of minorities use of space, the phenomena of placelessness, unhomeliness and loss of identity, hidden layers … etc. Continue reading

The city district of Zibo, the third largest by population within the Shandong province, has been a key stone mining location till recent years. The excavation activities, particularly focused on the Zichuan subdistrict, marked the rural areas of the province with invasive interventions and disruptions of the local ecosystem. The mountainous area is today characterized by woodlands, villages, mine pits in quarries and terraces built with stone. The extraction activities have been terminated, generating the need for new purpose and value in a location with unique cultural, ecological and social conditions. Continue reading

By bringing together two contiguous non-constructible plots, Shelle and Xavier are lucky enough to have one of the last building land in the Croix Saint Jérôme sector in Noisy-sur-Ecole (Seine et Marne). This wooded area with its diffuse habitat borders the Massif des Trois Pignons, the western part of the particularly wild Fontainebleau forest. The rocky chaos, sandy stretches and vegetation that compose it once served as a backdrop for the Barbizon painters’ school. This massif is the most original natural area in the parisian basin and is an internationally renowned hiking and climbing destination.
