After an overwhelming response to the first edition, the Charette is thrilled to announce the second edition of ‘15-Minute City’. Participants are required to design a module for a 15-minute city that can be replicated to create a larger city. You can design a fictional city or re-design a small part of an existing city anywhere in the world. Remember, you don’t need to design an entire city – just a module that can be replicated to create a larger city. As a city planner/designer, you are also free to recommend rules and policies to help make the lives of your city’s occupants better.

How can design be used to challenge the status quo, to interrupt the jargon, to disrupt and redirect ecological and socio-economic flows? LA+ Journal’s fourth international design ideas competition invites you to take an established place and design your own beneficial interruption within it. You can site your interruption anywhere and, if necessary, remove anything to make way for it. It can be an artwork, a garden, a building, a space, a thing, a barrier, an ambience, an opening, a catalyst, a performance, a program, an institution, an intervention, a folly… It can be any scale and it can be anywhere.

In this competition, participants have to design a space on the street where people view their spatial and social environments as a playground of knowledge, a place to see, touch, feel, taste, listen to, socialize with and learn from. A place where they see the world very differently and attach and take different meanings and experiences from and to people, to forms, places, spaces, and things, most importantly the intangible relationship between people and the street. The scale of intervention, programs, and site is up to participants. While designing, participants have to keep in mind that Architecture is the discourse of events as much as the discourse of spaces.

El Pantà de Sau is one of the most prominent features of its kind across the whole of Spain. The valley in which it lies was home to the small village of Sant Romà de Sau which is now submerged beneath the reservoir, apart from the Church steeple, which is still visible when the water level is low. The reservoir is one of many that provides water for Catalonia’s Capital city, Barcelona and is therefore of huge importance to the area. Continue reading
