Vietnam after the second world war faced a series of battles lead by their leader Ho Chi Minh for decades. This was to free the country from Japan, and subsequently the French Colonization. Their freedom struggle from foreign colonization was successful in 1986. The country had been through turmoil for decades and was in a state of great disparity. After 1986, Economic and political reforms under Đổi Mới, launched in 1986 itself, transformed the country’s economic status for the following years.

The overriding purpose of this proposed monument is to honor and express deep gratitude for the millions of Americans and Vietnamese who fought side-by-side to stop communist aggression and give the South Vietnamese people a chance to live in freedom. To give meaning to this difficult struggle, it is important for many of the Vietnamese people who fled their country and escaped communist persecution, to show their appreciation to those that helped them during and after the war. The Bangkok Artist’s Retreat competition is a case study in how to engage the public with the arts. By repurposing a brutalist department store, the projects are requested to reflect on both the history and the future of this Bangkok site. The loosely-defined program may be interpreted in many ways, and the judges placed particular focus on projects that displayed a strong concept that was clearly represented and logically expressed in the architecture.
