The meaning of this contest derives from the need to reconsider the presence of River Someşul Mic in the future development of the city as a result of insufficient recognition of the present uses of the river’s potential for the city, its inhabitants and visitors. The specific complexity implied by the relationship of the city with the “Someş of the future” in a long-term perspective determined the initiation to organize this competition aimed at valuing the benefits that this river brings to the city by conceptual reshaping of the waterfront, highlighting its landscape and ecological value and, at the same time, identifying the vocation of this natural city axis to transform the public spaces which it crosses by developing specific functions in the neighborhood of the watercourse. The subject of the competiiton is an urban design idea proposal for the Trade Fairs Brno site and part of the Brno wateworks connected to adjacent terminal and Riviera recreation area, which will show new way of using the development areas and the possibilities of the better integration of the complex to the city organism. The proposal in the scope of the urban study will be processed on the entire territory in accordance with the competition brief (see document P01). During the designing it is necessary to respect the generous urban concept of the Trade Fairs site based on the clearly structured public spaces surrounded by exhibition pavilions with great architectural value. The European two-phase Urban Design Competition promoted by the Municipality of Bergamo intends to overhaul open areas, public squares and spaces and new functions for the discarded buildings of the centre of the Lower City. It asks for participants with multidisciplinary skills and aims at strengthening the role of the Piacentiniano system as the identity generator of the city centre, exploiting urban spaces, reviving commercial activities, re-using existing buildings, promoting social and cultural events and improving the accessibility of the area.
