What is an URBAN INSERT? Well before going there we first need to understand what is urban design? Pretty simple, it is the art of designing and crafting new cities, towns at the same time doing necessary fixes to the existing towns & cities to enhance the living experience of its inhabitants.Urban design focuses on designing neigh-bourhoods , streets , public areas & public services. Now coming back to our first question – What is an URBAN INSERT ?Too easy , an insertor let’s say an installation that can elevate the quality of an existing space. The insert can be a public park ,a pavilion , urban furniture , a gallery ,an art installation , a small public library etc.Through this competition our aim is to look for proposals which add value , beauty & astatement to one of the India’s most picturesque location where two historic monuments of India – The Taj Mahal Palace and Gateway Of India stand tall.The challenge is to design a meaningful insert at the Gateway of India , Mumbai. With hundreds of visitors everyday from within the country and outside, the Gateway of India acts as a large public gathering space.The insert can be fully covered , semi -covered or open as per participants design proposal. Participants can use any material of their choice.The insert can be permanent or temporary.The installation should not exceed the height of 12 MTS. Entire site can be used for designing butany built structure ,insert, installation should not exceed 1200 SQ. MTS Basements or any kind of minor levels below ground level are not allowed. Anything you propose should be above ground level only.It’s time to give a contemporary design touch to this historic place with your URBAN INSERT.
