YACdesign – YAC’s platform dedicated to design competitions – , in collaboration with Stilfar Italia, a leading company in the production of coordinated furnishing complements, launches DESIGN OF DREAMS, a challenging competition of ideas to design a collection of furniture for the sleeping area in order to promote the modern culture of this object and reinterpret its meaning in the light of the contemporaneity

The cash prize of € 7,000 will be distributed to the winning proposals selected by an international jury panel made of Nicholas Bewick (AMDL Circle), Caterina Micucci (Atelier Atollo), Giorgio Donà (Stefano Boeri Interior), Massimo Iosa Ghini (Iosa Ghini Associati)

> BRIEF

The bed is the realm of the oneiric world, of mysterious places and inaccessible secrets. It is a common object, but one of extraordinary significance. It is the place of intimacy, rest and affection, the place of birth and parting.

From its immemorial origins, this object has been acquiring several meanings and has been significantly evolving in the common perception. The sleeping area has a dynamic history, as changeable as the importance it has played within dwellings. It used to be a space related to the last moments of the day. Now, in modernity, it is used extensively. It has become an extension of the living area partly due to the new smart working habits.

The bed indeed plays a crucial role in our lives since we spend one third of our life on it on average. Yet, it is often considered as something functional, desirable for its comfort, but ultimately always associated with the mattress. Actually, its lines and geometries contribute to the creation of an aesthetic object, which utility goes beyond its practical use: the bed is a symbolic, protective object, a nest that connotes the entire sleeping area.

In this spirit “Design of Dreams” was developed. This is the competition promoted by Stilfar Italia to design a collection of furniture for the sleeping area in order to promote the modern culture of this object and reinterpret its meaning in the light of the contemporaneity.

Design of Dreams requires young designers to design furniture proposals that are innovative and aesthetically impactful but also accessible, industrialized, and marketable.

This is the aim of Design of Dream, creating beauty in the routine, in the small yet essential everyday gestures such as resting and dreaming.
