BLT Architects is holding its 2016 Student Design Competition for undergraduate and graduate architecture students enrolled in an architectural program at an NAAB or CACB accredited school during the 2016 academic year. The competition carries a first place prize of a paid internship at the architectural and interior design firm in the summer of 2017 and $1000.

The mission of the competition is to create a mixed use development on a key underutilized riverfront site in the business district of one of Philadelphia’s many famous neighborhoods. Truly a “gateway site” between Center City Philadelphia and the neighborhoods and suburbs that lie to the northwest along the Schuylkill River, the site also lies at the foot of a unique historic bridge which is the connection point across the river for joggers and bikers on the trails on both sides of the river leading out from Center City.

For the first time, the competition will include an additional napkin sketch contest for the project described in the challenge. Entrants do not need to complete the main challenge to enter the napkin sketch contest; or they may also enter both competitions. The prize for the napkin sketch contest is $500.

Aside from the top prize of the 2017 internship and a cash prize of $1000, second prize is a $500 cash award and third prize is a $250 cash award. The winning entry will be posted on the BLTa website for 180 days and all entrants will receive a $10 Starbucks gift card upon submission.

The competition is open to students enrolled in an architectural program at an NAAB or CACB accredited school during the 2016 academic year. All entrants must be over the age of 18 and eligible to work in the United States.

The competition brief and materials will be released when students register and provide proof of active student status with a copy of their Student ID. The competition is now open and will continue through August 14, 2016. The winners will be announced on September 9, 2016.
