On september 24, 2022, The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova announced the launch of the INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE DESIGN COMPETITION FOR THE REHABILITATION OF THE NATIONAL PHILHARMONIC OF MOLDOVA – Rising Philharmonic.

September 24, 2020, marked a tragic event for the culture of the Republic of Moldova. Following the devastating fire, a large part of the headquarters of the “Serghei Lunchevici” National Philharmonic was consumed by flames. The library, the main hall, the rehearsal rooms, other spaces and numerous valuable instruments were destroyed.

“Serghei Lunchevici” National Philharmonic, was founded in 1940, during its 80 years of activity has become one of the most important concert institutions in the Republic of Moldova, performing a wide range of activities in various directions: academic, folk music, easy listening and jazz music. The National Philharmonic has been the place where the most representative bands began their activity, including the ensembles “Joc”, “Fluieraş”, “Lăutarii”, as well as notorious personalities of the national Moldovan culture: Serghei Lunchevici, Vladimir Curbet, Nicolae Botgros, Nicolae Sulac, Tamara Ciobanu, etc.

The “Serghei Lunchevici” National Philharmonic is an authentic attraction for the culture of the Republic of Moldova. Therefore, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova initiates the INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE DESIGN COMPETITION FOR THE REHABILITATION OF THE “SERGHEI LUNCHEVICI” NATIONAL PHILHARMONIC HALL – Rising Philharmonic. The Phoenix Bird was chosen as a metaphorical symbol of the campaign – the image of the rebirth of the Philharmonic from the ashes.

The competition is open to all architects and architects’ offices within the country and abroad, and aims to identify an architectural concept for the rehabilitation of the National Philharmonic, a modern, multifunctional cultural space, which would correspond to the latest world trends in comfort and acoustics, and become a real center of attraction for cultural activities in the country.

Along with the initiation of the competition, a web page dedicated to the competition was also launched: rising.philharmonic.md, which contains information about the “Serghei Lunchevici” National Philharmonic, details about the competition, including the Outline Brief & Regulations for participants, etc.

The competition will have several stages, the first being the launching stage. Registration of participants is done directly on the web page rising.philharmonic.md. After that, an international jury, made up of architects and music experts, will select the winning concept. The campaign will be supervised and promoted by a Board of Trustees, consisting of well-known personalities from the fields of culture and business. The members of the Board of Trustees will be the ambassadors of the project, the ones who will supervise each stage of the competition and will communicate the details of the project to the general public.

We invite international architects and architecture bureaus to join our competition. Together we can revive one of the most important cultural buildings in the Republic of Moldova.
