It is the result of years of experimentation and interaction between great masters of architecture. Each course comprises numerous educational formats offering an experience that can make the difference in young designers’ personal and professional careers.

THE COURSE

From Stonehenge to Greek temples, architecture is the signature of humankind on landscape, the artificial element that has always been connected to the natural environment. Architecture and landscape are linked by a fundamental continuity that is now starting to fade, damaging the quality of the space we dwell.

More than ever today, landscape is a precious heritage that architecture can and must enhance, while protecting it to pass it on to future generations: architects shall not give up on working on landscape, instead they should be able to design architectures that respond to each landscape’s specific feature and generates wonderful and unique spaces.

The “Architecture for Landscape” course was created on these premises: it aims at training designers who are able to meet the diverse needs of transforming territories, enforcing an attentive and productive dialogue with the surrounding landscape to respond to the needs of prestigious clients in outstanding contexts. Through a thorough analysis of the natural world, light and geomorphological features of terrains, the designers will become more and more able to reconnect human design to the natural environment and be inspired by landscape to design outstanding, sustainable and impressive architectures.

The course will be made up of 80 hours of lessons, a 32-hour workshop and multiple lectures by well-renowned professional architects. At the end of the course, YACademy Placement office will guarantee each student a proposal for an internship / collaboration within the partner studios.

The course is made of a teaching module of 80 hours, a 32-hours design and construction workshop, several special lectures, site visits and a period of internship/collaboration with one of the entities belonging to YACademy’s network.

WORKSHOP

CARRARA COMMUNITY QUARRY: Reuse of the disused caves of Carrara

Patrick Lüth | SNØHETTA

The workshop will be the practical opportunity to test all the notions provided during the teaching modules. It will guarantee strategic solutions to a real architectural project.  The workshop, conducted in collaboration with Franco Umberto Marmi, will focus on the reuse of an ancient disused cave located in the renowned marble caves of Carrara. The caves, dug in the heart of Alpi Apuane and face the beautiful beach of Massa, are a prodigy of interaction between human being and nature, a result of an amazing landscape, literally carved and worked by centuries of excavations and extractions.  A place that gives us one of the more charming landscapes on the planet, where huge steps, geometric voids, gashes and multiple levels, sculpt the pure mountains. In this place, centuries ago, artists such as Michelangelo, Canova chose their marble blocks to leave us artifacts that became part of art history. On the Vara bridges, students will have the opportunity to see a unique landscape with the aim of giving it a new meaning, transforming it through contemporary architecture and giving it back to the local community reinterpreted and regenerated.

CONTRUCTION WORKSHOP

Construction is a fundamental step in architecture. For this reason, YACademy offers its students the opportunity to participate in the process of producing their own ideas. Thus, the students will gain practical experience on construction sites and, above all, the authorship of projects built for excellent commissions, destined for a major media echo and capable of defining a turning point in their professional career.

SITE VISITS

CARRARA QUARRIES

In line with the topics of the workshop, students will have the opportunity to visit the marble caves of Carrara and the territory of Massa, in order to interiorize the place and take inspiration for the future steps of the design process.

ARCARI QUARRY

On the occasion of the lecture about Arcari Quarry, students will have the exclusive opportunity to visit the site with studio Chipperfield in order to collect input and reference useful for the development of the project in Carrara area.

ARTE SELLA

Concurrently with module “Art and Nature” students will have the opportunity to visit, with the director of the park, the amazing paths of Arte Sella. During the visit they can see the ability of contemporary thought to combine, in a equilibrate and synergic way, in a prestigious and highly characterized natural context.

FONDAZIONE RENZO PIANO

In keeping with Shinto tradition, in Japan every 20 years the temple of Ise is completely demolished and rebuilt identically on a plot facing the previous one. The purpose is to pass on building and craft skills from one generation to the next. During the work three generations meet: the sixty-year-olds who teach, the forty-year-olds who, having learned, build the new temple in a workmanlike manner, and the twenty-year-olds who observe and learn. Taking part in one of these ceremonies in the fall of 1996, Renzo Piano began to wonder how to transmit his professional experience to young people.

INTERNSHIP/COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES

To conclude the course, each student will carry out a period of collaboration with one of YACademy’s partner firms. Such collaboration will have a minimum duration of 2 months and guaranteed remuneration consistently with regulatory requirements. It will aim to perfect students’ skills, offering the rare opportunity to work and interact with some of the world’s leading firms. By enriching their experience through internships and collaborations, students will have a real chance to build a solid network of relationships, useful for accelerating and turning their career around.
