Human rights in Iraq remain fragile, as the country continues to emerge from decades of dictatorship, war and violence.

While the successive governments that have led the country since 2003 have taken measures aimed at improving the protection of their citizens, progress is still very slow due to the challenges facing the country.

The ongoing and protracted violence in Iraq continues to take a heavy toll on civilians and civilian infrastructure, subjecting them to senseless loss of life and injury. Art has always played an important role in human lives, but it has never been a rule for art to be of meaning or representative of something rigid. Abstract art started around the 19th century, a period that was characterized by the vast popularity of imitative and anecdotal representation. Movements like Romanticism, symbolism and expressionism were some of the movements that started around the same time that went against classicism and embraced the newfound freedom.

Often what makes the biggest difference is the so-called “grey spaces.” These transitional, in-between elements such as staircases, hallways, porches, eaves and vestibules can blur, or even eliminate the boundaries between the inside and outside. They play a major role in determining whether a development is functional, or a living, breathing environment.
